Reported by: Lauren Murphy Thursday, Aug 2, 2007 @09:38pm CDT While folks in Minneapolis are still in a state of shock over the collapse of a heavily traveled interstate bridge, a lot of people here in the South Plains are questioning the integrity of our bridges. "Pray you get over in one piece," says Mike Harkey, a resident of New Deal. Say good-bye to blind faith. Now, we look at bridges in a whole new way. "It's going to be a concern, wondering what's going to fall off," said Harkey. Officials from the Texas Department of Transportation say folks here in the South Plains don't have much to worry about "We have 431 bridges on the state system and we do not have any structurally deficient bridges whatsoever," said Randy Hopmann, the Lubbock district engineer for TX-DOT. TX-DOT has received a lot of calls about one bridge in particular, at the intersection of I-27 and FM 1729. Hopmann says it's only cosmetic damage, actually caused from salting icy roads. He says even still, they'll keep an eye on that one. "We're well aware of the situation. We monitor that bridge extremely close because of those issues." If anything good comes out of what happened in Minnesota, TX-DOT folks hope bridge up-keep becomes more of a priority. "We do have an aging infrastructure, and it costs money to keep it up to date and everybody is stretched whether your talking about the federal level, the state level, or the local county level. The money is stretched with that aging infrastructure. It's something we need to keep in the forefront and think about every day," said Hopmann. Bridges all over the country are inspected every other year, and that inspection is coincidenatally coming up in the area in less than two weeks. |
