
Phyllis S. Jones - District 4
Phyllis S. Jones was elected to
serve on the Lubbock City Council as the District 4
Representative in May 2004. District 4 is located
in southern Lubbock, with population of 34,000 (82.9
percent Anglo, 12.1 percent Hispanic, and 2.7
percent African-American).
Family Life
Phyllis is a
life-long Lubbock resident. She graduated as a proud
Plainsman from Monterey High School, and then went
on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Human
Sciences from Texas Tech University in 1978. Phyllis
and her late husband, Larry, raised two children.
She has six grandchildren and her favorite pastime
is to spend time with them.
Professional Life
Phyllis presently manages her family farm in Hockley
and Gaines counties. She was an owner of The UPS
Store (formerly Mail Boxes Etc.) for 18 years, and
recently sold the business. Phyllis also worked as a
Professional Event Coordinator for more than a
decade – planning, organizing, and executing all
details of a wide range of events. She is a
recipient of many business awards, including the
City of Lubbock Special Recognition for her
dedication to the Freedom Fountain Project, YWCA
Women of Excellence Business Award, and Advocate of
the Year from the Texas Recreation and Parks
Society. In 1996, the Sales Executive Association
named Phyllis as Member of the Year, and in 1982,
Beta Sigma Phi named her as Woman of the Year.
Community Activities
Phyllis has served on several committees
before being elected to City Council,
including chairperson of the City of Lubbock
Citizens Advisory Committee, the State Bar of Texas
Board of Directors, President of the Board of
Directors for Broadway Festivals, Inc., chairperson
and member of the City of Lubbock Parks and
Recreation Advisory Board, and the Entertainment
Lubbock Taskforce.
