Xcel Energy is asking its customers to conserve electricity.  This comes as Xcel employees are doing maintenance work at two of their largest power plants.  They're asking folks to turn off any unneeded appliances like fans, lights, and computers because they can eat up a lot of unnecessary energy.  They're also advising customers to set the thermostat at 78 degrees or higher and only use major appliances after dark.  A spokesperson tells us they're asking folks to do this to make sure no customers end up in the dark.

Preston Langford with Xcel says, "We just consider the system to be a little tighter than what we're comfortable with and we're just asking our customers to join with us in conserving a little bit of out power and we'll move right through it."

Officials say the two power plants that are offline should be working again by Tuesday evening, but they're asking customers to conserve all week while the weather stays hot and dry.
