Minimum Wage Raised to $6.55

As of today. folks making minimum wage officially get a pay raise.

            The federal minimum wage went from $5.85 an hour to $6.55 an hour today.

At this point the general consensus is that anything helps.  And many people here in the Hub City welcome the 70 cent raise.

            It will mostly affect those people working in the fast food, service, or retail industries.

            The good news is... Lubbock's average wage is already well above minimum -- at $7.50.

            The reason is Lubbock's low unemployment rate.  The market is competitive to keep workers.

            Several businesses across town that pay minimum wage have anticipated this pay raise, trying to reduce any monetary loss.

            Allan Wells, Domino’s General Manager:  “We knew, when the last one went through we knew it was coming, so we knew this one was coming, it's kind of uh, been in the planning stages.”

Martin Aguirre, CEO, WorkForce Solutions:  “It's always just planning.  You have to make sure that it's in the business plan.  We always stress that to employers as they look at the market.  Especially in Lubbock with the unemployment rate that you consider your competition and consider where you need to place your workers. “

Today's 70 cent pay raise is part two of a three phase increase.

            The third will be one year from now, and will take today's increase of $6.55 and make it $7.25.
