LUBBOCK, Texas - The Pittsburgh Pirates selected Texas Tech junior center fielder Barrett Barnes (Sugar Land, Texas) with the 45th overall pick in the supplemental first round of the 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Monday evening.

Barnes becomes just the second Red Raider in school history to be drafted in the first round while becoming the third highest drafted Texas Tech player in program history.

Barnes, a three-time All-Big 12 selection and preseason All-American, led Texas Tech and ranked among the Big 12 leaders in numerous offensive statistical categories while batting .325 (67-for-206) with 17 double, six triples, nine home runs and 49 RBI with 19-of-20 stolen bases.

A fixture in the Texas Tech all-time record book after just three seasons, Barnes owns a .319 career batting average with 203base hits, 171 runs scored, 51 doubles, nine triples, 33 home runs, 140 RBI, 113 walks and 50-of-56 stolen bases in 169 career games played.

One of the most decorated players in school history, Barnes has received 58 individual awards, honors and recognitions over his three seasons as a Red Raider, including Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 2010, named to numerous Freshman All-America teams and was named to four preseason All-America squads prior to this season.

Barnes was the fourth Big 12 player taken on Monday following Oklahoma State LHP Andrew Heaney (No. 9 - Miami Marlins), Texas A&M OF Tyler Naquin (No. 15 - Cleveland Indians) and Texas A&M RHP Michael Wacha (No. 19 - St. Louis Cardinals),
