Anthony Nichols, the man police shot and killed Monday night had another run in with the law-- just days before.
Nichols was arrested on June 14th for allegedly stabbing his girlfriend.
A local mental health professional thinks that could have been a warning of days to come.
According to the police report, Nichols told police he wanted to kill himself that day.
Police took him to jail and Nichols was charged with aggravated assault, unlawful restraint and interfering with an emergency call.
Later he was out on bail.
Just a few days after that police say he called them to this area.
He told them he had a gun and he threatened to shoot neighbors.
Police got to the scene and say they found him with a knife.
When he didn't drop it, they say a police dog was released.
Nichols dodged the dog, then police tell KLBK News he was shot.
Sharron Davis with Contact Lubbock Crisis Hotline said sometimes, when someone threatens to kill themself, they later threaten the lives of others.
"We see articles every week where there's a murder/suicide. And, unfortunately, you're talking about three, four, five and six family members that maybe have died. If someone is talking about killing themselves that is a huge red flag and you have to find out what's going on in that person's life," Davis said.
Nichols was pronounced dead at the hospital Tuesday.
The officer who shot him has been placed on administrative leave, per normal procedure.
As for Nichols' girlfriend, her daughter talked to KLBK News and said her mother is not ready to make a statement, but calls Nichols a good man.
