Supreme Court Upholds Obama Health Care Law Requirement that Americans Must Have Health Insurance

By: Russ Poteet
Updated: June 28, 2012
In a 5-4 decision, the court ruled that the core requirement,  the " individual mandate" that Americans buy insurance or pay a fine, is constitutional.

26 states had  filed suit against the law saying Congress could not force people to buy goods. But Chief Justice Roberts writing for the majority said that Congress CAN tax people for not buying insurance. So all of the provisions of the law remain: children under 26 can remain on their parents healthcare plan, children with pre-existing conditions will not be denied coverage and there will be no limits on how much policies pay out.

With 5 months until election day, the ruling is seen as a huge victory for President Obama.
