On the heels of the Colorado movie massacre, there may be a few people looking to create a different type of victim right here in Lubbock and all across the nation.

Scammers.

Experts say it happens every time something big and tragic breaks in the news.

People create fake charities web pages and send emails hoping you will send them money only it's not going to Colorado-- but to some scammer's pocket.

We've gotten a few messages from you about these scams already.

Greg Lindner with the Better Business Bureau said it was bound to happen.

"It doesn't surprise me that this stuff pops up. The scammers-- they're very opportunistic. They follow the news. Any type of headlines that they can try to use to their advantage, they're going to. That's just the nature of the beast," Lindner said.

Lindner said the best thing to do is research.

He said www.Give.org is a charity website connected directly to the BBB, so unless you know of the charity in question well you should donate at Give.org.
