Kylie Boyd calls herself a happy 17- year- old.
She's currently Miss Teen Lubbock and an avid horseback rider.
But two years ago she was diagnosed with West Nile Virus and she said it will stay in her system forever.
After months of seizures, lack of energy and severe nose bleeds, Boyd said doctors had no idea what was wrong with her.
Until she was finally tested for West Nile.
She said she was so sick she couldn't get out of bed and would sleep for three days straight.
Boyd got better but said she can never fully rid herself of the disease and still feels it's effects some days.
"There will be weekends after I went real hard all week and I know I have to stay home and I'll sleep it off. There will be weeks where I get real sick and I have to stay home from school again. I just kind of have to fight through it," Boyd said.
Although there have been no cases of West Nile in our area this year, city officials say you need to protect yourself.
If you're going to be outside at dusk, wear long pants, a long sleeve shirt and socks.
Also make sure to use an insect repellent with Deet.
