LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech freshman forward Janine Beckie was tabbed as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week Tuesday morning as announced by the conference. The recognition comes after her stellar performance in two victories at the Cal State Fullerton Under Armour Invitational last weekend.

The Highlands Ranch, Colo. native scored three goals in two matches highlighted by a spectacular game-winner against No. 20 Long Beach State on Friday with just 31 seconds remaining in double overtime.

"It's just great for Janine," head coach Tom Stone said. "She has worked hard to be ready for this season and her transition to the college game has been fun to watch. We have a lot of games left this season and a lot of opportunities for her game to grow even more."

After netting her third goal of the weekend on Sunday in a 2-1 win over host school Cal State Fullerton, Beckie was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

Beckie is the second Red Raider this season to earn Big 12 Player of the Week honors as junior forward Jessica Fuston was named the Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 28.

Friday's goal marked the third game-winning goal of the season for Beckie which leads all Big 12 freshmen and is second in the conference overall. Meanwhile, she leads the Big 12 in both shots (48) and shots per game (5.33) while leading the Red Raiders in five separate statistical categories.

Beckie's three game-winning goals are the second most in school history by a freshman, short of only Fuston who netted four during her freshman campaign in 2010.

Now on a two-match winning streak, the Red Raiders (7-2) will open Big 12 play at West Virginia Friday. First kick in Morgantown is set for 6 p.m. (CT).
