We've seen a dip here lately in the high gas prices, but it's not enough to save the costs of public transit.

Earlier this month we reported Citibus is considering raising their fares, but not without the people’s input first.

Next year's cost for public transit is being estimated at almost $677,000 more than what they paid this year.  So by raising the fare price by 20%, they hope to get back in the black.

20% is an increase of about $.25 per single ride, and $.50 for the day.

If after this meeting today, the consensus is to go ahead with the fare increase, then it will go into affect October 1st.

By holding this hearing, Citibus officials say they want to do what's best for their customers.

John Wilson, Executive Director: “I hope they agree, I hope the people will see, you know, public hearings, it's a two way street.  It's first to inform the public of what's going on, and so we're going to give it a short presentation and say why we need the fare increase, and then try to answer a few questions at the public hearing.  But then it's also to get input from what they feel like they want.”

If you missed the meeting tonight, but still want to express your opinions,  you've got another chance tomorrow (8/14)at 12 noon.

That meeting's at the main office that's located on

801 Texas Avenue
.
