$750,000 was going to be spent on the 34th street renovation project will now go towards improving sidewalks, gutters, and curbs on North University.

The proposed project would stretch from just north of 4th Street, around the Marsha Sharp Freeway, up to Clovis Road.

District 1 Councilman Victor Hernandez brought up this issue at Thursday's City Council meeting.
A 2004 bond package promised money to parts of district one, but according to Councilman Victor Hernandez, the money was spent in other parts of town.

"As council member, I think we all would want bond projects to be completed," said Hernandez.  "Believe it or not $750,000 is not a lot of money when talking about public improvement projects."

Hernandez fought for his district, and saw unanimous support across the council.

"You have my support," said Councilwoman Karen Gibson. "I think you're doing what's right, and what's right is to keep that money where it belongs."

"It's time to utilize, put it in the right place," said Councilman Floyd Price, "you have my support."

Jessie Ramos owns Garza and Ramos on North University.  He's been there for six years, and is ready to see improvements, although he worries they will come with a price.

"If it tears the road down, then it could slow business down a little bit," said Ramos.

This project will not hurt the 34th Street project, as that project is currently under budget.

City Council will make a second reading of this proposal at their meeting on October 11th before any money is moved.
