EverythingLubbock.com has confirmed one woman is dead after a major accident that left parts of S. Loop 289 shut down Friday afternoon.

The accident happened around 4:15 p.m. Friday in the 2000 block of S. Loop 289.

At one point, the wreck and its massive debris field had traffic shut down on both sides of the highway.

Eyewitnesses tell us a white truck was passing the McDonalds on the S. Loop 289 access road when it clipped the back of a truck, launched onto the loop, hit a ditch and began flipping in the air.

The white truck then rolled head-on into a white, 4- door passenger car in the westbound lane.

Drivers in three of the cars were transported to UMC by ambulance. A hospital spokesman tells us one of the drivers, a woman, died at the hospital.

Lubbock Police called out an Accident Investigation team to the scene hours after the accident, leaving the highway shut down well into Friday night. At one point a DPS helicopter flew overhead to survey the debris field.
