"The idea was to put everybody out on the road," Gonzalez said. "To hopefully be a deterrent just by the high visibility of the officers and trooper out on the field."

Corporal John Gonzalez said the extra patrol was a reaction to the growing number of drunk drivers out on Texas roads.

"Alcohol is one of those issues that is really acceptable by the general public," Gonzalez said. "It's readily available, it's sold locally."

But it is not all about the arrests.

The efforts were made not to get people in trouble, but to make the road a safer place Gonzalez said.

"We're not here just to arrest you for drinking and driving," Gonzalez said. "The issue and the problem is that the injury or fatal crash is resulting as the person drinks and drives and endangers themselves, as well as other people."

With their good work the officers are earning praise from a local group of women.

"One of those components is supporting our heroes," Eldredge said.  "I think it's always good when we can support the heroes and the law enforcement that are out their making the arrests and getting drunk drivers off the road."

Amanda Eldredge with Mother's Against Drunk Driving said there is only one thing that can help people who have been drinking before they get into a car.

"Time is the only thing that is going to sober you up," Eldredge said. "You cant drink a pot of coffee or eat food. It's not going to sober you up any faster. Time is the only way to do that and so as a safeguard always make sure you have a designated driver-that's sober."
