New Documents Detail Gillispie's NCAA Violation

According to the documents provided to KAMC, Tech athletic officials learned about the violations in December 2012 after a former athletics employee alerted them to multiple instances of then-coach Billy Gillispie making the team practice more than the amount of time allowed by NCAA rules.
The self-reporting form submitted to the NCAA in January says the team violated the practice rules over two different weeks in late October and early-mid November 2011.
On one instance, in October 29, 2011, the report says the team practiced for 7 hours and 15 minutes. According to the report, the team then practiced for 6 hours and 30 minutes the next day on October 30.
Tech athletics officials listed assistant coach Bubba Jennings and head Gillispie as the 'individuals involved' in the violation.
According to the report, Jennings was responsible for monitoring practice times but did not wear a watch and, therefore, could not record accurate times.
The violations prompted a terse letter from Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt to Gillispie on February 16, 2012 saying, in part, "Your conduct and lack of oversight as the head coach that resulted in these violations is simply unacceptable and will not be tolerated."
A representative for the Texas Tech Men's Basketball program declined to comment Thursday afternoon, referring all requests for comment to Hocutt's office instead.
