Texas Tech students have been working on the homecoming bonfire since 5 a.m. Friday morning.

Truck by truck, they delivered wood pallets to put into the pit.
Last years burn ban and severe drought cancelled the homecoming bonfire.

But this year, since that ban has been lifted and Lubbock is out of a stage two drought, the bonfire is back.

Students have been celebrating homecoming all week long with Spirit Board and Banner competitions.  Those boards are up around the Texas Tech seal for all to see.

Also throughout the week students competed in S.O. sing, a dancing and singing competition along with preparing their floats for a contest during the parade on Saturday.

Texas Tech student, Cynthia Sinclair, said homecoming is a great time to make new friendships.

"We do a thing called pomping where you just glue tissue paper onto the float I guess you can say," Sinclair said.  "But we build a float and it's great bonding time.  You're with your sorority sisters for a week and then you get to meet this new fraternity where you haven't met these guys before. So it's really fun bonding."

The bonfire will be tonight at 9 p.m. in the field behind the United Spirit Arena and South of the Leisure Pool.
