The highest posted speed limit around Lubbock is on parts of I-27, where drivers can go up to 75 MPH.

Before, I-27 was posted at 70 MPH.  Texas DOT then conducted a speed study, where they determined it was safe to travel at speeds up to 75 MPH on part of I-27.

The increase went into effect in February.

According to Dianah Ascencio, with Texas DOT, said roads around Lubbock won't see speeds that high anytime in the near future.

"It is very doubtful that we will ever see speeds that high here in this area because our roadways are simply not designed to carry traffic at that rate of speed," said Ascencio.  Her reasoning included that right now, we are not creating new roads, but maintaining the roads that have already been built.

"We're just maintaining the roadways we have here, and so it is really highly unlikely that we'll ever be put in that position where we'll have to evaluate a roadway to see if the speed limit can be reasonably adjusted to 85 MPH," said Ascencio.  "Whether we raise it or lower it, whatever speed we're posting on there is safe and reasonable for that segment of roadway."
