7-5 Win Evens the Red and Black Series

LUBBOCK, Texas - A five-run second inning sparked the Red Team in a 7-5 victory over the Black Team while evening the series in the annual Texas Tech baseball Red & Black Series on Monday, Oct. 29 at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
 
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Dominic Moreno (1-0) set the tone for the Red Team while earning the win pitching four innings with three strikeouts. He allowed one run on three hits in the victory.
 
The Red Team sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning with five base hits - including a two-run single from sophomore third baseman Bryant Burleson - to give the Red Team a 5-0 advantage.
 
Freshman right-handed pitcher Matt Withrow (0-1) suffered the loss going 1.1 innings with one strikeout while giving up five runs (all earned) on five hits with three walks.
 
The Black Team made it interesting late with three runs in the sixth and with a run in the eighth to cut the Red Team's lead to 7-5.
 
In the ninth, Red Team junior right-handed pitcher Heath Herrington battled out of a jam when two walks and a fielding error loaded the bases with nobody out. Herrington ended the game with two strikeouts and a fly out to right field to give the Red Team the victory and to record the save.
 
Designated hitter Wade Stramp (2-for-3, run, walk, stolen bases) and catcher Jarrard Poteete (2-for-4, run) had multi-hit games while center fielder Brett Bell scored a run and had two RBI to lead the way for the Red squad.
 
The Black Team was paced offensively by center fielder Devon Conley's 3-for-5 performance, which included two triples a stolen base and RBI. Catcher Mason Randolph went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk and freshman second baseman Alec Humphreys went 2-for-5 with a run, double and RBI. Senior right fielder Brennan Moore reached base safely in four of five plate appearances with two walks, a hit-by-pitch, RBI and a stolen base.
 
Freshman right-handed reliever Justin Bethard pitched four relief innings for the Black Team while allowing just one run on three hits with three strikeouts and didn't allow a walk.
 
The Red & Black Series finale - Game 3 - is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 30 with a 3 p.m. first pitch at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. Admission is free.
 
RED & BLACK SERIES GAME 2 NOTES:
 
RED TEAM
- RHP Heath Herrington has pitched in relief in both games of the Red & Black Series... He has pitched three scoreless innings with four strikeouts.
- LHP Andre Wheeler has made a pair of outings in the Red & Black Series... He has pitched 4.1 innings with six strikeouts while allowing just three hits.
- CF Brett Bell went 0-for-2 but managed to tally a run scored, stolen base, two walks and had two RBI... He has a stolen base in each game of the Red & Black Series.
 
BLACK TEAM
- Scored all of its runs in Game 1 in the first inning (3)... scored three of its five runs in Game 2 in the sixth inning.
- CF Devon Conley is now 5-for-8 in the Red & Black Series.
- 2B Alec Humphreys has reached base safely in 5-of-9 plate appearances in the Red & Black Series.
- RHP Justin Bethard has made an appearance in both games of the series while totaling five innings pitched while allowing just one run.
