"Hopefully it'll help those kids when they brush their teeth to have better teeth and less braces fall off," said local orthodontist Dr. Wentz.

Dr. Wentz has been buying kid's Halloween candy back and then donating it to the South Plains food bank for the past 15 years.

"It's to create a little bit of awareness for National Children's Orthodontic Health Month, it's to give back to the food bank and have the kids to have the opportunity to give back to the community with their candy," Wentz said.

Wentz Orthodontics started "The Great Candy Buy-Back" with just his patients, but recently opened it up to the public.

"We originally started this program with just our patients within our office program to help the kids with their oral hygiene and to help keep the braces on," said Wentz.  "But we've opened it up to the community and allow some of those kids to give back to the community. "

But not all the kids are eager to give up their hard-earned treats.

"Sometimes it's funny to watch them when it's being weighed and they want to take one or two of their favorite pieces back," Wentz said.

Even though the kids can sometimes be hesitant about giving up all those sweets Wentz continues to see the community give back.

"We really want to thank the parents for bringing those trick-or-treaters in because those trick-or-treaters can't get in by themselves.  And usually we raise over 250 pounds of candy and that's given to the food bank.  The kids feel real good about it."

You can bring your candy to Wentz Orthodontics at 4013 84th St. from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Each pound of candy you bring in is worth $1.
All kids are limited to 10lbs.
