Both parties fought hard to get the crucial youth vote.

Lubbock County Democratic Party Chairman Kenny Ketner thought young people saw improvements in President Obama's first term and that could get him their vote.

"When it comes to student loan debt and managing that where students don't graduate with a mountain of debt hes really led the way and allowing young people to stay on their parents insurance until age 26 through Obamacare".

Young people may benefit under Obamacare but Republican Chris Hill said its not the best care for everyone overall.

"I personally work for a D-B company and the Obamacare that has been out into place has actually cut spending in all the wrong places and  see a lot of old people that cannot get the equipment that they need".

With a recession money is tight in many households and whether you're a student or in the work force Carl Tepper said voters can see Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are focused on the economy.

"I think the younger people are very aware that the national debt is is being thrust upon them. It's really their money we're playing with and so I think those issues are really reverberating with the youth right now".

The economy, military action, and immigration topoed lists of issues people considered when they voted but many young people, like Patrick Coterillo, were concerned about civil and reproductive rights.

"I like Barack Obama because, personally, I like his stance on equality. He's the first president to openly back legalizing gay marriage".

The youth vote gave President Obama an edge in the 2-thousand-8 election time will tell if he will have the same surge in numbers in 2-thousand-12.
