Updated: November 6, 2012

After a year of a race full of controversy R.C. Cheek is the new Sheriff of Hockley County winning with4,314 votes against David Kinney's 2,475 votes.

"Voters showed up early and they've been there all day in a steady flow," Cowan said.

Pat Cowan is the Republican representative for Lubbock County.

She said this race is going to be close but it is for an important job.

"The sheriffs job is more administrative," Cowan said. "It's not pack a six gun on your hip and get out there."

R.C. Cheek stopped by the courthouse just as polls closed this evening to get his campaign signs.

"I'm just glad its over," Cheek said. "It's been over a year, Im just glad its over."

One thing Cowan said might give Cheek a leg up in the race is when voters make a straight Republican party vote.

And she might be right.

We caught one man running to vote at the last minute and he said that is exactly how he voted.

Cheek told us if he wins the race...

"All I can say is that Jim and I, my chief deputy, will do our best to do a fantastic job," Cheek said.  I do appreciate all the supporters and people that help me, work with me, work for me and I'll do my best, my dead level best, one hundred percent to do a god job."

It looks like he might win according to the people we talked to.
