Mosquitos are out in full force right now, and you can blame the past weeks rain for their surge in numbers. Dr. Steve Presley conducts research on mosquitoes in Lubbock and says one nasty species thrives in these hot temperatures. They lay eggs where rainfall collects along the ground and the heat speeds up their incubation period, leaving area parks and yards full of young mosquitoes within days of rainfall. "This year has been a very unusual year. Weve hardly had any mosquitoes, very few up until this past week. And weve had the moisture and the timing was just right. Weve got huge numbers everywhere," says Presley. To keep the mosquitoes from biting you, make sure to wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, spray with a DEET repellent and try to avoid areas of water or high vegetation.
