Mayor Glen Robertson is proposing a new location, in the 3800 block of 50th Street. His reasoning for the move deals with the cost, saying it would be cheaper to buy a new building than continue paying rent at the Slide location.
Some Lubbock residents are worried if the library moves, a section of the city would be under-served, and that the new location may not be big enough for all of the programs the community wants.
"I don't want to have to learn a new library every 5 years," said one resident at City Council Thursday. "And I don't want to spend that kind of money on a temporary thing." She's referring to the possibility that the location at 50th may not be the final location.
Another resident said "It is essential that any new location have space for these community room that could accomodate these programs so that more children could participate in these programs."
Mayor Robertson hopes the issue can be voted on in an upcoming meeting, possibly before the end of the year.
