Jackie Buck is a supervisor with UMC EMS.  He said it is tough when a call comes in for an injured child.

"You know I've been doing this for about 32 years, and we see something different, but each situation it boils down to the same situations you're going to see, it is heartbreaking when you see a child get hit," said Buck.

Accidents like what happened Thursday night are something Buck said he's seen plenty of times before. "We've had several accidents where kids are in the parking lots with their parents, and they start running away and cars hit them, and it's something we don't need," said Buck.

Thursday night at Kingsbery Haven, three year old Carlos Gonzalez was killed after being struck by a truck backing through the parking lot.  According to LPD Accident Investigators, Gonzalez and his mother were walking through the parking lot, when Gonzalez ran from his mother.

Gonzalez was then struck by a pick-up truck that was backing through the lot.  Gonzalez was pinned beneath the truck for a few minutes, until EMS could free him and rush him to University Medical Center with serious, life threatening injuries.

A spokesman with UMC said Gonzalez died around 10:30 Thursday night.

EMS said they see an increase in accidents like this during the holiday season, and that people should be careful as they drive around town.

"The thing is be more observant to traffic because we've got a whole slew of more cars on the streets, people are worried about getting their items, and they're going all over the place," said Buck.

Buck also reminds drivers to move to the right if they see an ambulance moving through the streets, to help the first responders get to the scene quickly and safely.
