The City of Lubbock was ready for Gustav evacuees, but preparation wasnt cheap. The city allotted half a million dollars for the relief effort, but in the end they spent about $10,000. That compared to the 2.1 million dollars spent on Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. This time around the money was used to pay for staff in the Coliseum and necessary supplies. But with hundreds of volunteers ready to assist, it certainly helped cut the citys costs. With several more tropical storms brewing in the Atlantic, city officials say theyre not packing up those supplies just yet. Says Kevin Overstreet "Were not going to tear them down, were going to leave them in place, and if the state calls on us for housing evacuees or people that want to relocate to this area temporarily, then we have a place for them to stay."
