"Well that's their family. Honestly, we'll be the only person they see all day long and that's their family is the pet."
Lubbock Meals on Wheels has been providing pet food for their residents since 1999 when they saw how important the pets were to their owners. Assistant Director Lisa Gilliland knows how important pets are to the residents.
"And that's when we realized these pets provide such valuable companionship to people that are home bound, elderly, and disabled. That if we can help them stay independent in their own home and keep their companion animal that's just an even better combination..."
This year Pets Plus is helping Meals on Wheels by through donations and gift programs at their store.
"Anyone that goes into pets plus and buys dog food or cat food, they will donate a pound of food for every 10 dollars worth of food purchased. They'll donate that food back to Meal on Wheels."
Mike McKaskle has been volunteering for Meals on Wheels for 6 years and he says the recipients are always appreciative.
"We're just grateful that we have the bags of food come in and have this program that we can feed their animals...their family."
The Meals on Wheels Pet Program runs year round but they like to also like to include a special prize for the pets during the holidays.
"They are actually included in our 12 days of Christmas that we do for all of our recipients. One of the days is called Santa Paws and there's different groups that put together different treats for the recipients pets that are on the program so those will be going out in December as well."
