Here are some tips Craigslist list's on their site to avoid being scammed online:

- Deal locally with people you can meet in person
- Never wire money through wire services
- Never give out financial information
- Do not submit to credit checks or background checks before you meet the other person in person

Scambusters, a site that deals with helping people avoid all kinds of scams, has these tips for anyone looking to rent a home from an internet ad:

- Check to see if the home is listed anywhere else. The trend is that scammers will post an ad about a home that is actually for rent, trying to get a little bit of money from a lot of people.
