Spirit Program Director Stephanie Rhode says just getting into the Capital One Mascot Challenge is like a mini contest to beat the other mascots!

"We applied, we've applied before but this year we got selected and its a great honor. Only 16 mascots across the nation were selected to be contenders for National Mascot of the year."

Texas Tech's Raider Red made it to the semifinals of the Capital One Bowl Mascot Challenge thanks in large part to spirited students who constantly voted.

"Every single day for 4 or 5 months so it's been a lot."

Red Raider beat the University of Miami Ibis in the regular season round but were paired together again in the playoffs and Miami stepped up it's game for a win.

"Now they're coming on really strong. They have voting mobs, what they call voting mobs, every night. And they're really trying to encourage their fans in Miami, and Miami is a huge city, to support their mascot so this is going to be a tough week but we really want to make it past this round and be in the national championship."

There was no limit on how many times you could vote. The Campus Life Office held a voting party and is encouraged students, alumni, and Lubbock residents to do the same.

"We've have a lot of support, our fans have been so great, but we're really asking them right now to bear with us and push this final, for this week and then hopefully for next week."
