The Board of Regents, however, said they only get prior notice of a coaching decision. They don't play a role in interviewing candidates, or submitting lists for potential hires.
When a decision is finally made, first Interim President Lawrence Schovanec makes the decision, then passes that person on to Chancellor Kent Hance for approval. Chancellor Hance would then extend a contract, but not without first giving the Board of Regents prior notice.
"It gives the board of regents the opportunity to know the selection that would be made, and while we will not vote upon it, of course if there are concerns, that would give the board the opportunity to make those concerns known," said Chairman Jerry Turner.
