At least one person is dead after a multi-vehicle pileup on I-27.
The wreckage stretched from at least Exit 17 to Exit 16.
It happened in near zero visibility around 12:45pm.
DPS says 23 vehicles were involved in the pileup, including at least one semi-truck that crashed into a car.
A second tanker hauling petroleum was pulled off the road out of fear of a buildup static electricity.
Initially, rescue crews had a hard time locating all of the cars involved because of the low-visibility conditions.
Rescue crews also had trouble getting to the scene.
DPS set up a central command area at the New Deal Truck Stop where victims were taken to be triaged and other drivers and passengers who were not hurt could be picked up.
Crews called in the 'mass-casualty' bus to take more than a dozen injured victims to the hospital.
At least ten people were taken to UMC and seven to Covenant with moderate injuries.
Radio traffic reported some victims were calling 911 from their cars in order to get help.
Officers from DPS, Lubbock County Sheriff's Office and New Deal are responding.
Fire and emergency crews from New Deal, Abernathy and Idalou are also en route.
The pile-up shut has down I-27 in both directions from Exit 13 to Exit 17. Those roads are still closed as of 4:45 because of low visibility.
