"I think I just heard it on the radio one day and thought that would be entertaining so I took him down there and it was."
The 17th annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener National Race put Ruddiger the wienie dog against 8 other dachshunds from across the United States. Ruddiger made it to the national championship this year but he wasn't exactly championship material in his first race.
"Well he actually did pretty good in the first race. He got down pretty close to the end and he was the leader of the pack and then he just decided to go do something else and it didn't work out."
If Ruddiger wins the race his owner will get 1,000 dollars and both will be honored at halftime of the Holiday Bowl in San Diego. But Ruddiger didn't exactly train for the race.
"He lays around most of the time and kind of runs every once in a while."
Even if Ruddiger doesn't win Kevin Isom says he will still bring him back for some racing fun.
It's just pretty funny to see that many wiener dogs in one spot. He doesn't come across many dogs his own size. So to get to play with dogs his own size is a good deal. So yeah we will definitely go back."
