It's nice to see folks from all over the community pulling together to make sure the city is ready for evacuees, if they come. Nearly 500 folks have signed up to volunteer, including medical professionals, construction workers, college students, and at least one evacuee from Hurricane Gustav. Brenda Kay Smith evacuated her home in New Orleans when Gustav hit the gulf about two weeks ago, and she's decided to move back to Lubbock permanently. She had lived her for 17 and just moved to New Orleans about nine months ago. She's putting her job search on hold for now to volunteer at the Lubbock shelters.
