Local business Sharp Shooters said they've had nearly 25 participants in each concealed handgun class.  That number is up 50% since the Newtown tragedy.

"Right now on the list we'll have a ton of people sign up," said J.D. Clay, employee at Sharp Shooters. They realize that since the shooting in Connecticut that it's a very real thing.  It can happen somewhere else and not too far from my home and where I travel everyday."

The class teaches people how to safely handle a firearm and when to use it which Clay said is now necessary information.

"It's becoming almost a necessity to have a concealed handgun license," Clay said.  "It's good to know the law, what's on your side, what you need to do, how you need to react, in certain situations."

Sharp Shooters knocks the class out in one, 10-hour-day.  The class will cost you, though.  It's $100 to complete, but Clay said it's an affordable option to the alternative.

And as for those who are enrolling, Clay said guns don't discriminate; participants come from all walks of life.

"You'll have couples come in, you'll have older couples come in, an old man that's always carried his whole life and now realizes, 'I should probably get my license anyway' a lot of things like that," said Clay.  "And of course you always have the younger generations like us you know they want to get it because you see a lot of what's going on in the world."

Interested in signing up to get your concealed handgun license?

You can visit Sharp Shooters at 5062 50th St and put your name on the list, or call them at (806) 791-123.

The class is completed in one, 10-hour-day and is held every three weeks.
