Record-Breaking Rainfall Leaves Lubbock Flooded

By: Amy Montalvo
Updated: September 12, 2008
Folks over at the National Weather Service said theyve never seen rain like this before, but if you can believe it, there was a time when the city was more flooded than this. We have old footage from back in June of 99 when we didnt have the playa lake drainage system in place. Weather service officials say even though last nights flooding was significant, problems would have been much worse if we didnt have the current drainage system in place, especially with the magnitude of rain we got. Says Jody James of the National Weather Service, "We set a couple of records both for 24 period and a calendar day, we had around 7.8 inches for the 24 hour period and that shattered the old record by 2 inches and weve been keeping record since 1911, so thats pretty impressive."
