The Lubbock Police Department arrested and charged 22-year-old Texas Tech student Austin Hasten with Friday night's murder.
The Lubbock Fire Department was dispatched Friday night to a structure fire at the Autumn Ridge Apartment Complex at 2101 82nd Street, apartment 305.
Police said LFD found the body of 51-year-old Michele Terry inside her burning apartment with cuts on her body.
After investigating, LFD determined multiple fires were intentionally set inside Terry's apartment.
According to the report, when police arrived, Hasten approached one of the officers and attempted to take his gun. Police then arrested Hasten and after patting him down found a blood covered knife, Terry's license and a woman's watch in his possession.
Police also reported Hasten smelling of gasoline and having soot on his face.
LPD found Terry's car blocks from the apartment complex. According to the report Hasten siphoned gas from her truck to set the apartment on fire.
The report also shows that Terry and Hasten were Facebook friends and according to apartment staff, were well-acquainted.
In 2011, Hasten ran his vehicle into an apartment complex in Brazos County while reportedly under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms. He was arrested and charged with a DWI and assaulting a police officer.
Police have not released information on the Tech student's state during the murder or information on a possible motive.
Hasten has been charged with murder, assault of an officer, attempting to disarm a police officer, and resisting arrest and is being held at the Lubbock County Jail on a $3 million bond.
