Lubbock may not be taking in Hurricane Ike evacuees, but that isnt stopping people in the Hub City from helping East Texans cope with hurricane damage. The Salvation Armys Disaster Services plans to send four men to the east side of the state on Thursday. Theyll join other Salvation Army canteens and help serve food and hand out water to hurricane victims. Right now theres sixty Salvation Army canteens in East Texas. Lubbocks Disaster Services truck is equipped with a kitchen that can prepare several hundred meals at a time. The crew will find out what area of Texas theyre needed in most on Wednesday and will then pack all the food and water they have and head out to help. "If youve been sitting there without food or water and somebody shows up, you know were not the Good Humor people, but well give you food, water and if you need a hug or in need of a prayer, well do that," says Salvation Army volunteer Dave Freriks. The Salvation Army says they have more than enough food and water to take with them. What they do need right now are monetary donations.
