Local Gun Owners Angry Over Obama's Proposed Plan

President Obama is asking Congress to pass a law providing for universal background checks for gun purchases, a ban on high-capacity magazine clip, and a renewed ban on semi-automatic rifles, those so-called assault weapons.
And these recommendations are stirring a lot of emotions from gun owners here in Texas.
Many have asked what Obama's proposals actually mean.
A lot of Lubbock residents are worried about what's going to happen if the guns they already own are outlawed.
One local attorney broke down President Obama's plan, and several Lubbock residents believe their Second Amendment rights are being pushed aside.
Lubbock gun owner, David Bloom, disagrees with Obama's plan. He said that it will only put more innocent people in danger.
"There's a reason that higher magazine capacities were invented because, unfortunately, sometimes five rounds or six rounds is not enough to put down someone who is trying to do you harm," said Bloom.
Amber Rodriquez, a police officer in training, agrees. She says that when it comes to protecting her family and the public--seconds count.
"There are certain occasions when the police officers cant get there in time," said Rodriquez.
"As a police officer, yes, I would be able to have a gun but my family will not. I can't be there twenty-four-seven to protect them."
But what does this new proposal actually mean? Rob Hogan, a Lubbock attorney said that gun owners should not be worried--just yet.
"I would tell any gun owners that nothing has been passed yet. So they shouldn't be worried about getting rid of firearms," said Hogan. "Nothing that is currently owned is effected by anything at this point."
Hogan said if the government does plan to take certain firearms away from current owners, they will have to find figure out a way to compensate them.
"If we don't see any current grandfather of firearms, then the government is going to have to address what to do if we're taking guns away from people. And I want to stress that hasn't been proposed," said Hogan.
And David Bloom added he'll do everything he can to keep it that way.
"I'll do everything i can to fight."
The NRA attacked the president's proposals today, calling him an elitist, hypocrite because his daughter's have armed secret service protection. They also called for armed security at every American school.
