Lubbock officials are also dealing with another continuing problem of hot checks writers. Businesses get thousands of them each month, and tonight, officials are warning violators to either pay the money you owe or face going to jail. Several times a year, officers conduct raids to round-up those who have warrants out for hot checks. Investigator Randy Nelson telling violators to stop letting it get to that point. He says hot check writers get at least half a dozen notices in the mail before any criminal charges are filed. And if you're breaking the law, you should pay-up before the next raid.Nelson says, "The benefit is if they come in here and take care of it, they're not going to go to jail. If we have to go out there and find them, there is a chance they will have to go to jail." The manager of Dustee's Jewelry store adds, "We're out the money. It's just a loss. It's kinda like them coming in and stealing from us, which it actually is, and they're just giving you a piece of paper with their name on it."
If you have some hot checks to take care of, you can stop by room 112 at the County Courthouse, call 775-1111, or visit the Lubbock County website and pay online.
