LP&L Addresses Concerns Over Smart Meters

Smart meters have been a hot topic these past few weeks.
Many of people are worried that the meters could actually be dangerous and some residents think those potential health risks are being kept from the public.
The reason for these new
meters is to get rid of outdated ones. Smart meters will be able
to record the amount of energy, gas, and water people use in their homes by
the minute and in great detail
But some people are concerned about the effects the wireless signals emited by these meters can have on your health such as the amount of radiation customers will be exposed to if they're installed in their homes.
LP &L workers presented a packet to the Lubbock City Council Tuesday addressing all of the public's concerns as well as research done on the health effects of smart meters.
The council plans to review the information and vote on it along with LP &L.
LP & L'S public information officer, Chris Sims said, right now, nearly ninety percent of Texas homes already have these meters installed and that LP &L has been slow to change because they want to make the best decision possible.
Sims said they want everyone's concerns to be addressed.
"The staff prepared a booklet that contained a document from Texas Public Utility on a health study, a very thorough document," said Sims. "And we want to make sure that all of our board members have that."
Two bills have been filed in the State Legislature and one discusses the option of allowing people to opt out of having a smart meter altogether.
