Texas Tech Dominates Jackson St., 18-0

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech plated 16
runs in the second inning and held Jackson State to just one hit in an 18-0 rout
Friday afternoon in the Texas Tech Invitational opener at Rocky Johnson Field.
The Red Raiders
(11-5) finished with season highs in both hits and runs en route to their
largest margin of victory since also defeating Alcorn State, 18-0, on March 13,
2011. Tech's 16-run second also marked its most runs in an inning since scoring
20 in the second as well against North Carolina Central on March 12, 2010.
Adriana Perez led the
way with six RBI, five of which that came off two second-inning home runs. The
senior, who now has a Big 12-leading 10 home runs this year, smashed a solo shot
early in the inning and then connected on a grand slam later in the frame.
She also added a
first-inning RBI single that scored Mikey Kenney. It was the second six RBI game
for Perez already this year and the third time she had homered twice in a game
as well.
Sandy James also
added a three-run bomb in the second for her second home run of the season. She
was one of four Red Raiders with at least two RBI, joining Perez, Shelby Johnson
and Sydnie Tapia.
Tech head coach
Shanon Hays turned to his bench midway through the second inning as 21 of 25
players on the roster found their way into the lineup. Of that total, 11 had at
least one hit in the game and eight drove in at least one run.
The Red Raiders were
equally as dominant in the circle as well as Jackson State's (4-14) only hit
came off a Sabeana Romero leadoff single to start the top of the second. It was
the second one-hitter for the Tech pitching staff this year as Cara Custer
tossed one on her own last Saturday against UT Arlington.
Gretchen Aucoin (2-0)
picked up the win after tossing two innings in relief of starter Brittany
Talley. The freshman struck out two before giving way to Shannon Carrico, who
also struck out two while throwing the fifth inning.
Jasmine Warren earned
the loss for the Tigers after giving up 12 runs, all earned, off 15 hits and
four walks in four complete innings. Jackson State had previously fell, 5-3,
earlier in the day to Northern Colorado.
