Sinkholes In West Texas Attract Visitors

By: Allison Morrison
Updated: March 6, 2013
The recent collapse of a large sinkhole in Florida has many wondering how and where these sinkholes occur.

We have several sinkholes here in West Texas, including two large ones in Winkler County.

Winkler County is just northwest of Odessa.

The first started forming at a construction site along Highway 115, back in 1980.

More than 30 years later, an even bigger hole caved a mile away.

Winkler County Sheriff George Keely says as the holes continue to grow, they could collapse Highway 115.

The holes attract curious visitors from all over, but Sheriff Keely says visitors should keep their distance because the holes are still "active."
