The festival is a competition for Aztlan dance groups and also has a dance and music exposition.

Festival Director Zenaida Ojuero-Reyes said many people do not know how diverse Mexico is as a country.

"Mexico has 32 states and each state has its own culture. It has it's own dance, its own music, it has its own style, costumes, steps, music, everything."

Stephen Richey enrolled his daughter in Aztlan dance classes to help her learn about her heritage.

"To give her some cultural background, something different than she would normally see. Her mom is Hispanic so it kind of gives her a sight back into her culture and her history."

The Viva Aztlan Festival is from 5:00 to 9:00 pm at Cavazos Middle School Friday March 8th and from 12:30 to 9:30 pm Saturday March 9th at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. Friday tickets are 10 dollars and Saturday tickets are 12 dollars.
