A hometown hero was honored today, exactly one year after dying in combat in Afghanistan. Navy Hospital Corpsman Mark Cannon died last year when his team was ambushed. Cannon was fatally wounded and died giving medical aide to a fellow soldier. On Thursday Cannon was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroic service. His father, Thomas Cannon was impressed with the community's support for Cannon and all West Texas soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"As long as people remember him, he's gonna have a legacy. And we're trying to facilitate people remembering and keeping what he lived for by the scholarship we've set up at Tech," says Cannon.

The Mark Cannon and Rebecca Cannon Memorial Scholarship supports Tech students working towards pre-professional health degrees. To donate to the scholarship fund, you can visit GiveToTech.com.
