IRVING, Texas - Samantha Adams has been named the Big 12 Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, announced league officials.
It is the second such honor for the sophomore from New Braunfels, who also won the award last season for the week of March 13.
Adams picked up a pair of ranked singles wins last week, knocking off No. 87 Laura Claus of No. 64 San Diego, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) and outlasting No. 106 Hermon Brhane of No. 28 Oklahoma, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Her lone singles loss came at the hands on No. 4 Gina Suarez-Malaguti of top-ranked North Carolina, 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles, Adams, teamed with Kenna Kilgo to go 3-0, picking up No. 1 doubles position wins over No. 64 San Diego, No. 1 North Carolina and No. 28 Oklahoma. Adams and Kilgo, who are 11-3 in dual matches this spring and ranked No. 34, upset the No. 14 tandem of Hermon Brhane and Whitney Ritchie, 8-7 (7-3). The win on Sunday in doubles was Adams' 60th, moving the junior into 20th in career doubles wins at Texas Tech.
Overall this season, Adams is 11-14 in singles and 14-6 in doubles.
