The City of Lubbock wants to annex a three-mile-wide strip of territory from the county for future growth and development. The territory is just below 114th Street and stretches between Frankford and Alcove Avenue.
County residents living in the area are trying to fight the annexation. More than a dozen people spoke against the move at Tuesday's council meeting.
"They offer us nothing and our taxes will immediately go up when we are annexed," said Aubrey Stark of Lubbock County.
Many of the citizens said they feel their needs are more than fulfilled by the county. City officials say the annexation is essential to the growth of the city.
