More than half of the Brownfield Volunteer Fire Department resigned today, after city leaders named a new chief.

Attorney Bill McGowan is now representing the volunteer firemen and McGowan confirms 11 of the 23 volunteers resigned, but didn't provide specific circumstances leading up to the resignations.

Brownfield Mayor Glenn Waters speculates the appointment of a chief may have had something to do with it.

He says two men, Dennis Rowe and Fire Marshal Marvin Dawson, were up for the fire chief position, but Dawson wasn't given the promotion, instead the job went to Rowe.

"I understand there may be some hurt feelings, but he (Dawson) hasn't lost any money, he hasn't lost any positions, he just wasn't hired for the new position," Mayor Waters says.

Mayor Waters told us he's willing to meet with these firemen to address their concerns, but says he doesn't think any changes will be made.
