A high speed chase near Clovis over the weekend left one man in critical condition, and his mother is still in shock after she watched police shoot her son five times.

Earlier this week we told you the story of Jawayne Helfferich, after he led police on a high speed car chase before being shot by area police. Tonight, his mother, who was also sitting in the passenger seat during the chase, is speaking out. She says her son may not be innocent, but his condition in the hospital is surely unwarranted.

Glenda Camp says her son was afraid of going back to jail, and that's the reason why he fled. Helfferich has a suspended license, and has several warrants out for his arrest. But his mother says troopers used excessive force once the chase ended, when they shot him five times. He remains at UMC Wednesday night, where he is being treated for gunshot wounds to his neck, jawbone, collarbone, and both arms.

New Mexico police say officers on the scene fired shots only after they felt there was an eminent threat. They say one officer had gotten out of his car, and Hellferich was driving towards him.

Helfferich's family says they are looking into taking legal action against New Mexico Police, citing excessive force.
