Purse Snatchings Increase

Unfortunately, the holidays mean more opportunities for thieves to zero in on folks out doing some shopping.
Just this week we've seen several folks fall victim to purse snatchings, when they least expected it.
Earlier this week we told you about Sandy Salas, she was the woman leaving United Supermarket when Harris came up from behind her and tried to steal her purse.
Fortunately -- her father was standing by and scared Harris away before he got anything or seriously hurt Sandy.
Another case -- yesterday a woman was mugged in the South Plains Mall parking lot.
So as we prepare for the holidays, you need to be aware and conscious of your surroundings.
Police say men should keep their wallets in their front pocket to avoid pickpocketing, and women should carry their purse tucked under the arm.
Sandy says it was a traumatic experience she won't soon forget.
Sandy Salas, victim of attempted mugging: "You hear about it all the time, but you never think you're going to be the victim of it. I mean, who knows. He could have had a knife, a gun.
Detective Brandon Price, Lubbock Police Deptarment: "With the holidays being busy, and everyone going around, make sure that when you're out and about, make sure you're aware of your surroundings, and the cell phone does distract you when you're walking, driving, whatever you're doing, 'cause you're concentrating on the conversation not concentrating on what you should be doing."
We spoke with administration over at South Plains Mall, they say they will have reinforcement security for the holidays. But if you still don't feel safe, you can ask for a security escort to walk you to your car anytime of the day. Just go to guest services.
