Lubbockites Rally to Repeal Proposition Eight

By: Kristen Kennedy
Updated: November 15, 2008
Protests were held Saturday across the US - and here in Lubbock - in support of same sex marriage. People in Lubbock rallied near Texas Tech, walking around with signs and encouraging others to show support for the Proposition 8 protests. Proposition 8 states that only marriage between a man and woman is valid and recognized in California. This amendment canceled a recent California State Supreme Court decision that recognized same sex marriage. Tech students felt it was important to bring up awareness of gay rights especially in a traditionally conservative city.

"Some people think that gay marriage and gay rights are a privledge. That we're asking for a privledge. We're really a minority that's looking for the same advantages as every other citizen," says organizer Jared Horsford.

More than thirty people participated in the rally near Texas Tech. They're hoping their signs and shouts will encourage religious and civil groups to discuss gay rights with more community members.
