Brownfield City Council Troubles

By: Julie Musgrave
Updated: December 17, 2008

In a special meeting today in Brownfield, Mayor Glenn Waters addressed the more than 500 signatures on a petition asking for his resignation. The petition stems from a list of alleged wrongdoings while in office, including the earlier hiring of a new fire chief which led to 11 of the 23 station volunteers to quit.

But Mayor Waters says the accusations against him are untrue, and other councilmembers are standing behind his decision not to resign.

Glenn Waters, Mayor of Brownfield: "I will not resign my office as Mayor of Brownfield. I am aware of all the points listed in the petition against me, and I am more than confident that when the facts come out, they will prove that I have done nothing wrong."

Dale Travis, Councilmember: "I'm disappointed, I'm always sorry to see division in the community, we just don't need that sort of thing in a little town like Brownfield.

The petition calls for Mayor Waters to resign within 5 days, or hold a recall election within 60 days.

But according to state law, the recall election must be held at the closest uniform election date, which will be May 9th, 2009.
